Dear Mr. Whitlock:
Thank you for your feedback on the Ideas series on nuclear energy. I have asked Mr.
Allen to respond to the specific points of fact you raised about the series. He will
provide you a detailed answer to your queries.
You raised another issue: that Mr. Allen is a member of the Board of Energy Probe.
This is in fact true, although it was not the case when the original programmes were
made in 1986. It should be noted that Mr. Allen did declare his connection at the
start of the interview with Mr. Rubin. Having said that, I have told Mr. Allen that
if he wants to produce other programmes relating to nuclear energy issues, he will
have to sever his ties with Energy Probe.
As citizens, CBC employees have a right to join organizations. But we must be
rigorous about keeping those private connections and programming apart.
One other observation: Energy Probe is not simply, as you characterize it, an anti-
nuclear group, but a public policy group that deals with the energy sector.
Although you found this series wanting, I hope you will continue to listen to CBC
Radio, and keep challenging us when you feel necessary.
Sincerely,
Esther Enkin
